Opening · a definition

Descent theorists like Meyer Fortes introduced the concept of filiation and Complementary filiation. Complementary filiation refers to kin not from the descent side/line.

Body · points

Relevance →

(1) Meyer Fortes - Complementary filiation is essential for well-being of human beings.

(2) Filiation is political & hierarchical due to competing interests, duties and obligations; however, complementary filiation provides emotional bonds. Eg: Mama-Bhauja in Hindu society.

(3) J. Goody → Complementary filiation also performs functions of inheritance sometimes. Eg: Yako herders inherit rituals matrilineally where property comes patrilineally.

(4) Specific roles are there with social significance like: → Rites De passage → Mediation eg: Leopard Skin chief in Nuer of South Sudan (Evans-Pritchard) → Rituals in different festivities

(5) They also provide residual security in case of threat to filial kin. eg: Death of husband

(6) They play role of support during crisis.

Criticism - Edmund Leach said that "Complementary filiation" concept of Fortes had put them as mere side kin but they are very important as they provide sexual partners.
