Body · points and prose

→ Aadhaar is a unique identification number given to the domiciles of India. Its original idea was 'right to be recognised' of the poor people. However, given the hiccups in implementation of Aadhar in Direct Benefits Transfers, it has come under criticisms.

Case: A young poor girl in Jharkhand died because her family was denied food by the PDS because they did not have their Aadhar linked with the ration card.

CRITICISMS: • Above case shows how most vulnerable people are deprived of their entitlements, as important as food, due to improper implementation of the Aadhar system. • Aadhar system suffers from technological glitches - such as internet connectivity, mobile networks, and social gaps such as illiteracy and unaware poor citizens.

Potential solutions :

  • Gradual implementation of Aadhar is the solution. For this, government and civil society can play their roles.

Government :

  1. Ensure Infrastructure - physical, digital.
  2. Laws and policies be centred around needs & concerns of poor people.

Civil society :

  1. Awareness campaigns about Aadhar and its benefits.
  2. Help people link their Aadhar with ration cards, etc.
