Opening

Indian state of forests Report 2021 was released by Ministry of Environment as a 2 yearly survey report on the state of Tree and forest cover in India.

Body · points

Key findings

  1. India's forest area has increased to 21% from earlier 21.67% in 2019 report.

  2. Tree cover has increased from 2.8% to 2.9% (i.e forest areas plus the standalone trees).

  3. North east has seen a net reduction in forest area (due to construction) => Cause of concern

  4. Andhra pradesh, Telangana have increased areas under forest now.

  5. Animal corridors have seen a rise in tree cover. (Tiger Reserve corridors)

  6. Mangrove cover has increased as well.

However the figures are still not Satisfactory because:

-> The Statistics are taken by satellites and official Records

-> differs on ground reality

-> The increased area too is very less to achieve Afforestation targets

Steps like strengthening afforestation under CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) obligations, conducting EIA etc should be taken up to meet our Environment conservation targets
