Causes of heat waves 1. High-pressure system SUN (pointing arrows down) arrows pointing down from H.P. Heat dome effect (arch showing trapped heat) 2. Anthropogenic factors such as climate change due to carbon emission traps heat 3. Urban Heat island due to asphalt construction

Effects of heatwaves

  1. It causes an increase in maximum temperature of a region, thus prolonged heat

Plain (above 40°C) <---> Hilly region (above 30°C)
  1. Loss of life due to heat stroke.
  2. Threat to livestock.
  3. Failure of crops due to extreme heat conditions → food insecurity
  4. Increased pressure on water leading to decrease in water table.

Therefore, various policies are adopted in India for effective management of

extreme risk of heat :

  1. Role of IMD in early warning system

  2. Promoting Green city through "Nagar Vans"

  3. Ensuring "whole of society" approach
