Question 70: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following UN organisations/agencies :

  1. 1.World Food Programme
  2. 2.United Nations Children's Fund
  3. 3.United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
  4. 4.International Labour Organisation

How many of the above has/have been awarded the Nobel Prize twice ?

a1
b2
c3
d4

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

UNHCR has won the Nobel Peace Prize twice, in 1954 and 1981. UNICEF won it in 1965, the ILO in 1969 and the World Food Programme in 2020, each once. So only one of the four has won it twice. Do not confuse these with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is not a UN agency and has won three times.

  • 1. WFP won once, in 2020.
  • 2. UNICEF won once, in 1965.
  • 3. UNHCR won in 1954 and 1981.
  • 4. ILO won once, in 1969.

How you could have got this

No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.

This follows UPSC’s provisional key; the final key could change it.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: only UNHCR has won twice.
  • (b) Wrong: only one agency has won twice.
  • (c) Wrong: WFP, UNICEF and ILO won once each.
  • (d) Wrong: only UNHCR has won twice.

Only the provisional key (27 May 2026) was found; the final key replaces it when found.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
