Question 19: History and Culture

Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, the famous classical singer from Karnataka, represented the :

aAgra Gharana
bGwalior Gharana
cPatiala Gharana
dJaipur-Atrauli Gharana

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Mallikarjun Mansur from Dharwad, Karnataka, belonged to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, founded by Alladiya Khan. He trained under Alladiya Khan's sons Manji Khan and Bhurji Khan. He was known for his vigorous style and for reviving rare ragas, and received the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. The Agra, Gwalior and Patiala gharanas have other founders and styles.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: Agra gharana is linked with Faiyaz Khan, not Mansur.
  • (b) Wrong: Gwalior is the oldest khayal gharana, not Mansur's.
  • (c) Wrong: Patiala gharana is linked with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
  • (d) Right: Mansur belonged to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.

Only the provisional key (27 May 2026) was found; the final key replaces it when found.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
