Question 58: Basic Numeracy

The ratio of male to female workers in two companies A and B is 13 : 10 and 7 : 5, respectively. If both the companies have the same number of female workers, then what is the ratio of the total number of workers in A to those in B?

a24 : 23
b23 : 24
c18 : 17
d27 : 18

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Make the number of female workers equal. Company A has males to females 13 : 10; company B has 7 : 5, which is 14 : 10. With 10 females in each, A has 13 + 10 = 23 workers and B has 14 + 10 = 24 workers, so the ratio of A to B is 23 : 24.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: 24 : 23 inverts the ratio.
  • (b) Right: 23 : 24.
  • (c) Wrong: 18 : 17 does not follow from totals of 23 and 24.
  • (d) Wrong: 27 : 18 does not follow from the totals.
