Select the answer using the code given below.

a1 and 2 only
b1 and 3 only
c3 and 4
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Statements 1, 2 and 3 are not correct; only 4 is. Statement 1 is unsupported: only one patch of land is set aside for grazing, and nothing says his other lands lie unfarmed. Statement 2 is false: he is contrasted with greedy landlords. Statement 3 is false: farmers were willing to pay well, so he could have made money by leasing it. Statement 4 is supported: he refused to give up the land and believed a landlord owes his tenants care.

  • 1. Not correct: only one patch is reserved for grazing; the rest is not said to be unfarmed.
  • 2. Not correct: he is contrasted with greedy landlords.
  • 3. Not correct: farmers were willing to pay well, so the money he forwent is clear.
  • 4. Correct: he refused to give up the land and believed in caring for tenants.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Not correct: he is contrasted with greedy landlords.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Not correct: farmers were willing to pay well, so the money he forwent is clear.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 4.

This follows UPSC’s provisional key; the final key could change it.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: omits 3, which is also incorrect.
  • (b) Wrong: omits 2, which is also incorrect.
  • (c) Wrong: 4 is correct, so it cannot be among the incorrect statements.
  • (d) Right: 1, 2 and 3 are the incorrect ones.

Only the provisional key (27 May 2026) was found; the final key replaces it when found.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
