UPSC Prelims 2024 · GS Paper I
Question 9: Geography
Consider the following information :
| Waterfall | Region | River | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Dhuandhar | Malwa | Narmada |
| 2. | Hundru | Chota Nagpur | Subarnarekha |
| 3. | Gersoppa | Western Ghats | Netravati |
In how many of the above rows is the given information correctly matched ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Only Hundru is correctly matched: the Hundru falls lie on the Subarnarekha in the Chota Nagpur plateau (near Ranchi). Dhuandhar is a Narmada fall, but it is at Bhedaghat near Jabalpur, not in Malwa. Gersoppa (Jog) falls are on the Sharavathi river in the Western Ghats, not the Netravati. Remember: Sharavathi gives Jog, Subarnarekha gives Hundru.
- 1. Dhuandhar is on the Narmada but near Jabalpur, not in the Malwa region.
- 2. Hundru falls are on the Subarnarekha in the Chota Nagpur plateau.
- 3. Gersoppa (Jog) falls are on the Sharavathi, not the Netravati.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: only row 2 is correct.
- (b) Wrong: rows 1 and 3 each carry an error, so only one row is correct, not two.
- (c) Wrong: rows 1 and 3 are wrongly matched.
- (d) Wrong: row 2, Hundru on the Subarnarekha in Chota Nagpur, is correct.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
