Question 89: Geography

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.The Red Sea receives very little precipitation in any form.
  2. 2.No water enters the Red Sea from rivers.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The Red Sea lies in a hot desert region and gets very little rainfall. No perennial river flows into it, and it loses far more water by evaporation than it receives, which makes it one of the saltiest seas. Both statements are correct. Remember: the Red Sea is very saline because of high evaporation, little rain and no river inflow.

  • 1. The Red Sea gets very little precipitation.
  • 2. No river flows into the Red Sea.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: The Red Sea gets very little precipitation.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: No river flows into the Red Sea.

Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statement 2 is also correct.
  • (b) Wrong: statement 1 is also correct.
  • (c) Right: it has little precipitation and no river inflow.
  • (d) Wrong: both statements are correct.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
