Question 73: Polity and Governance

Consider the following pairs :

PartyIts Leader
1.Bharatiya Jana SanghDr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee
2.Socialist PartyC. Rajagopalachari
3.Congress for DemocracyJagjivan Ram
4.Swatantra PartyAcharya Narendra Dev

How many of the above are correctly matched ?

aOnly one
bOnly two
cOnly three
dAll four

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Rows 1 and 3 are correct. The Bharatiya Jana Sangh was founded in 1951 under Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, and the Congress for Democracy was formed in 1977 by Jagjivan Ram. The Socialist Party was led by Acharya Narendra Dev, not C. Rajagopalachari, who founded the Swatantra Party, so rows 2 and 4 are swapped.

  • 1. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
  • 2. The Socialist Party's leader was Acharya Narendra Dev, not Rajagopalachari.
  • 3. Jagjivan Ram led the Congress for Democracy.
  • 4. Rajagopalachari founded the Swatantra Party, not Narendra Dev.

How you could have got this

No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: two pairs, not one, are correctly matched.
  • (b) Right: Jana Sangh with Mukherjee and Congress for Democracy with Jagjivan Ram.
  • (c) Wrong: the Socialist Party and Swatantra Party pairs are wrong.
  • (d) Wrong: rows 2 and 4 have the leaders swapped.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
