Question 61: Polity and Governance
Who was the Provisional President of the Constituent Assembly before Dr. Rajendra Prasad took over ?
aC. Rajagopalachari
bDr. B.R. Ambedkar
cT.T. Krishnamachari
dDr. Sachchidananda Sinha
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha, the oldest member, was the provisional (temporary) president of the Constituent Assembly when it first met on 9 December 1946. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected its president two days later. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee, and Rajagopalachari and T.T. Krishnamachari were members of the Assembly, but none of them presided at the start.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: Rajagopalachari was a member of the Assembly but not its provisional president.
- (b) Wrong: Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee.
- (c) Wrong: T.T. Krishnamachari was a Drafting Committee member, not the provisional president.
- (d) Right: Sachchidananda Sinha was the provisional president before Rajendra Prasad.
