Who of the following rulers of medieval India gave permission to the Portuguese to build a fort at Bhatkal ?
aKrishnadevaraya
bNarasimha Saluva
cMuhammad Shah III
dYusuf Adil Shah
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara empire permitted the Portuguese to build a fort at Bhatkal on the Karnataka coast in the early 16th century. The others do not fit: Narasimha Saluva and Muhammad Shah III (a Bahmani sultan) ruled before the Portuguese reached India in 1498, and Yusuf Adil Shah founded the Bijapur sultanate, whose lands did not include Bhatkal.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: Krishnadevaraya gave the Portuguese permission to build a fort at Bhatkal.
- (b) Wrong: Narasimha Saluva ruled before the Portuguese reached India.
- (c) Wrong: Muhammad Shah III was a Bahmani sultan who ruled before the Portuguese came.
- (d) Wrong: Yusuf Adil Shah founded the Bijapur sultanate, and Bhatkal was not in his territory.
