UPSC Prelims 2024 · GS Paper I
Question 45: Economy and Social Development
With reference to the sectors of the Indian economy, consider the following pairs :
| Economic activity | Sector | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Storage of agricultural produce | Secondary |
| 2. | Dairy farm | Primary |
| 3. | Mineral exploration | Tertiary |
| 4. | Weaving cloth | Secondary |
How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Dairy farming is primary (animal husbandry), and weaving cloth is secondary (manufacturing), so pairs 2 and 4 are right. Storage of agricultural produce is a service, so it is tertiary, not secondary. Mineral exploration is a mining activity of the primary sector, not tertiary. Remember: primary extracts or grows, secondary manufactures, tertiary provides services.
- 1. Storage and warehousing is a service, so it is tertiary.
- 2. Dairy farming is a primary sector activity.
- 3. Mineral exploration is a primary sector activity.
- 4. Weaving cloth is manufacturing, which is secondary.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: two pairs, 2 and 4, are correct.
- (b) Right: dairy farm as primary and weaving as secondary are the correct pairs.
- (c) Wrong: pairs 1 and 3 are wrongly matched.
- (d) Wrong: pairs 1 and 3 are wrong.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
