UPSC Prelims 2024 · GS Paper I
Question 28: Environment and Ecology
Which one of the following shows a unique relationship with an insect that has coevolved with it and that is the only insect that can pollinate this tree ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Fig trees have an obligate mutualism with fig wasps: each fig species is typically pollinated by its own wasp species, which enters the enclosed fig flower cluster, pollinates it and lays its eggs there, and the larvae feed on some of the seeds. Neither partner can complete its life cycle without the other, the classic case of coevolution. Mahua, sandalwood and silk cotton are visited by several kinds of animals.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the fig depends on its specific fig wasp, the classic coevolved pair.
- (b) Wrong: mahua is visited by many animals, not a single insect.
- (c) Wrong: sandalwood is pollinated by various insects.
- (d) Wrong: silk cotton flowers are visited by birds, bats and insects.
