Question 13: Geography
Consider the following description :
- 1.Annual and daily range of temperatures is low.
- 2.Precipitation occurs throughout the year.
- 3.Precipitation varies between 50 cm – 250 cm.
What is this type of climate ?
aEquatorial climate
bChina type climate
cHumid subtropical climate
dMarine West coast climate
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Marine West Coast climate lies on the western sides of continents in the mid-latitudes, where the westerlies bring moist oceanic air in every season. This keeps annual and daily temperature ranges low, with rain in every month and annual precipitation of about 50 to 250 cm. Equatorial climate has far heavier rain, and humid subtropical (China type) climate has a larger seasonal temperature range.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: equatorial rainfall is much heavier than the 50 to 250 cm described.
- (b) Wrong: China type climate has hot summers, cool winters and a wider temperature range.
- (c) Wrong: humid subtropical climate has a larger annual temperature range.
- (d) Right: low temperature ranges and year-round rain of 50 to 250 cm describe the Marine West Coast climate.
