Question 57: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability
A person walks 100 m Westward, then turns left and walks 100 m. He then takes 225° turn clockwise. In which direction is he walking now?
aSouth-West
bSouth-East
cNorth-West
dNorth-East
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
He walks west, then turns left to face south. A 225° clockwise turn from south: 90° takes him to west, 180° to north, and the last 45° to north-east. He is now heading north-east. Remember: clockwise from south goes south, west, north, east, so a turn of 225° lands halfway between north and east.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. South-west is 45° clockwise from south.
- (b) Wrong. South-east is 315° clockwise from south.
- (c) Wrong. North-west is 135° clockwise from south.
- (d) Right. North-east is 225° clockwise from south.
