Question 43: Reading Comprehension

Passage—2 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “When a child reaches adolescence, there…”Passage beginning “When a child reaches adolescence, there…”

Based on the above passage, the following assumptions have been made :

  1. 1.The adolescent does not feel comfortable with his parents because they tend to be dominating and assertive.
  2. 2.The adolescent of modern times does not have much respect for parents.

Which of the assumptions given above is/are valid?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Assumption 1 is valid: the passage says parents' concern often hides a wish to control, and their opinions are so dogmatic that adolescents seldom confide in them. Assumption 2 is not: the passage speaks of the conflict between a young person's wish for independence and parents' attitudes; it says nothing about modern times or about a lack of respect.

  • 1. Controlling, dogmatic parents make adolescents reluctant to confide.
  • 2. The passage does not mention modern adolescents or respect; it describes a clash of attitudes.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Controlling, dogmatic parents make adolescents reluctant to confide.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: The passage does not mention modern adolescents or respect; it describes a clash of attitudes.

Only (a) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. Only assumption 1 follows from the passage.
  • (b) Wrong. Respect for parents is not discussed, and modern times are not mentioned.
  • (c) Wrong. Assumption 2 is unsupported.
  • (d) Wrong. Assumption 1 is supported.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
