Question 41: Reading Comprehension

Which of the following statements best reflects/reflect the most logical and rational inference/inferences that can be made from the passage?
- 1.In conventional classroom learning, the central goal is duration of learning rather than attainment of competency.
- 2.Conventional classrooms encourage one-size-fits-all approach and stamp out all differentiation.
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The passage says conventional classrooms put fixed duration ahead of how effectively children learn, and give every learner the same lectures in the same way for the same time, so outcomes vary widely. Statement 1 therefore follows: time, not competence, is the fixed element. Statement 2 follows too: one uniform treatment for everyone, with no allowance for individual needs. Both are valid inferences from the passage.
- 1. Duration is fixed while learning outcomes vary.
- 2. Every learner gets the same lectures the same way, a one-size-fits-all approach.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Duration is fixed while learning outcomes vary.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Every learner gets the same lectures the same way, a one-size-fits-all approach.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Statement 1 is valid, but statement 2 is also supported.
- (b) Wrong. Statement 2 is valid, but so is statement 1.
- (c) Right. Fixed time and uniform teaching are both described.
- (d) Wrong. Both statements are supported.
