Question 36: Basic Numeracy

Consider the following : Weight of 6 boys = Weight of 7 girls = Weight of 3 men = Weight of 4 women

If the average weight of the women is 63 kg, then what is the average weight of the boys?

a40 kg
b42 kg
c45 kg
d63 kg

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The women's average of 63 kg means four women weigh 4 × 63 = 252 kg together. The first line gives 6 boys = 4 women = 252 kg, so one boy averages 252 ÷ 6 = 42 kg. Mind the trap: the equality is between the total weights of the groups, not between single persons, so the boys' average is not 63.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. 40 kg would make 6 boys weigh 240 kg, not 252.
  • (b) Right. 252 ÷ 6 = 42.
  • (c) Wrong. 45 kg would make 6 boys weigh 270 kg, not 252.
  • (d) Wrong. 63 kg is the women's average, not the boys'.
