Question 98: International Relations and Current Affairs

In the recent years Chad, Guinea, Mali and Sudan caught the international attention for which one of the following reasons common to all of them?

aDiscovery of rich deposits of rare earth elements
bEstablishment of Chinese military bases
cSouthward expansion of Sahara Desert
dSuccessful coups

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Chad (2021), Guinea (2021), Mali (2020 and 2021) and Sudan (2019 and 2021) all saw military takeovers of government, which is what drew international attention. Rare-earth discoveries, Chinese military bases and the southward spread of the Sahara are not features common to all four.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Rare-earth discoveries are not common to all four countries.
  • (b) China has no military bases in all four countries.
  • (c) Desertification is a Sahel concern but not the reason these four were in the news.
  • (d) Correct: all four saw military coups.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
