Question 83: History and Culture

Consider the following statements :

  1. Statement-I7th August is declared as the National Handloom Day.
  2. Statement-IIIt was in 1905 that the Swadeshi Movement was launched on the same day.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

aBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II is the correct explanation for Statement-I
bBoth Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II is not the correct explanation for Statement-I
cStatement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect
dStatement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Both statements are correct and II explains I. National Handloom Day is observed on 7 August, a date chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on 7 August 1905 at the Calcutta Town Hall, when people began boycotting foreign cloth and promoting Indian handloom products. The Swadeshi launch is the reason for the date.

  • I. 7 August is National Handloom Day.
  • II. The Swadeshi Movement was launched on 7 August 1905 and explains the date.

How you could have got this

If you were sure Statement-I is correct, (d) goes. Then judge the second statement; if it is correct too, decide whether it explains the first.

What you needed to know: 7 August is National Handloom Day.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: both are true and the 1905 launch is why the day was chosen.
  • (b) II is the reason for the date, so it explains I.
  • (c) Statement II is true, so 'II incorrect' is wrong.
  • (d) Statement I is true, so 'I incorrect' is wrong.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
