Question 49: History and Culture
Who among the following rulers of medieval Gujarat surrendered Diu to Portuguese?
aAhmad Shah
bMahmud Begarha
cBahadur Shah
dMuhammad Shah
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat (1526 to 1537), hard pressed by the Mughal emperor Humayun, made a treaty with the Portuguese in 1534-35 giving them Bassein and permission to build a fort at Diu in return for help, which opened the way to Portuguese control of Diu. Ahmad Shah founded Ahmedabad in the early fifteenth century, and Mahmud Begarha ruled in the later fifteenth century.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Ahmad Shah founded Ahmedabad and ruled long before the Portuguese came to Diu.
- (b) Mahmud Begarha resisted the Portuguese at sea and did not surrender Diu.
- (c) Correct: Bahadur Shah conceded Diu to the Portuguese.
- (d) Muhammad Shah is not the sultan associated with the Diu agreement.
