Question 27: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.The Government of India provides Minimum Support Price for niger (Guizotia abyssinica) seeds.
  2. 2.Niger is cultivated as a Kharif crop.
  3. 3.Some tribal people in India use niger seed oil for cooking.

How many of the above statements are correct?

aOnly one
bOnly two
cAll three
dNone

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

All three are correct. Niger (Guizotia abyssinica) is a minor oilseed grown on poor, rainfed soils and sown in the Kharif season. The Government announces an MSP for nigerseed along with other oilseeds. It is cultivated mainly in tribal and hill areas such as Odisha and Chhattisgarh, where some tribal communities use its oil for cooking.

  • 1. MSP is announced for nigerseed.
  • 2. Niger is a Kharif crop.
  • 3. Some tribal people cook with niger oil.

How you could have got this

No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Only one would deny two true statements.
  • (b) Only two would deny one true statement.
  • (c) Correct: MSP, Kharif sowing and tribal cooking use are all true.
  • (d) Niger has an MSP and Kharif season, so not none.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
