UPSC Prelims 2023 · GS Paper I
Question 2: Geography
Consider the following pairs :
| Port | Well known as | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Kamarajar Port | First major port in India registered as a company |
| 2. | Mundra Port | Largest privately owned port in India |
| 3. | Visakhapatnam Port | Largest container port in India |
How many of the above pairs are correctly matched?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Kamarajar Port (formerly Ennore) was the first major port in India to be corporatised, registered as a company under the Companies Act. Mundra, developed by the Adani group, is the largest privately owned port in India. Visakhapatnam is known for its cargo volumes and deep draught, not containers: the biggest container handlers are Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) and Mundra. So pairs 1 and 2 are right and pair 3 is wrong.
- 1. Kamarajar (Ennore) was the first major port registered as a company.
- 2. Mundra is India's largest privately owned port.
- 3. The largest container ports are JNPT and Mundra, not Visakhapatnam.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Only one would mean one of the first two pairs is wrong; both are right.
- (b) Correct: pairs 1 and 2 match, pair 3 does not.
- (c) Pair 3 is wrong; Visakhapatnam is not the largest container port.
- (d) Pairs 1 and 2 are correctly matched.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
