Question 39: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the following including the Question and the Statements : There are 5 members A, B, C, D, E in a family. Question : What is the relation of E to B ?

  1. Statement-1A and B are a married couple.
  2. Statement-2D is the father of C.
  3. Statement-3E is D's son.
  4. Statement-4A and C are sisters.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and Statements ?

aStatement-1, Statement-2 and Statement-3 are sufficient to answer the Question.
bStatement-1, Statement-3 and Statement-4 are sufficient to answer the Question.
cAll four statements together are sufficient to answer the Question.
dAll four statements are not sufficient to answer the Question.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Use all four. Statement 4: A and C are sisters. Statement 2: D is C's father, so D is also A's father. Statement 3: E is D's son, so E is A's brother. Statement 1: A and B are married, so B is A's husband. E is therefore the brother of B's wife, which makes E B's brother-in-law. Without statement 2, E's link to the sisters is missing; without statement 1 or 4, B's link is missing.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: nothing connects A to D's family without statement 4.
  • (b) Wrong: without statement 2, D's link to the sisters is missing.
  • (c) Right: all four together make E B's brother-in-law.
  • (d) Wrong: all four together settle the relation.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
