Question 97: Science and Technology
Which one of the following statements best describes the role of B cells and T cells in the human body ?
aThey protect the body from environmental allergens.
bThey alleviate the body’s pain and inflammation.
cThey act as immunosuppressants in the body.
dThey protect the body from the diseases caused by pathogens.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
B cells and T cells are lymphocytes, the core of the body's adaptive immune system. B cells make antibodies against specific pathogens, and T cells kill infected cells or coordinate the immune response. Both also form memory cells that give lasting protection. Their role is defence against disease-causing pathogens, not allergy protection, pain relief or immunosuppression.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Allergens are not their protective target, and they can even drive allergies.
- (b) Pain and inflammation relief is not their role.
- (c) They mount immune responses rather than suppress them.
- (d) Correct. They defend against pathogens.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
