UPSC Prelims 2022 · GS Paper I
Question 88: Geography
Consider the following pairs :
| Region often mentioned in the news | Country | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anatolia | Turkey |
| 2 | Amhara | Ethiopia |
| 3 | Cabo Delgado | Spain |
| 4 | Catalonia | Italy |
How many pairs given above are correctly matched ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Anatolia is the Asian part of Turkey, and Amhara is a region of Ethiopia, so pairs 1 and 2 are right. Cabo Delgado is a northern province of Mozambique, where an insurgency has been in the news, not Spain. Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain with a strong independence movement, not Italy. Two pairs are correct.
- 1. Anatolia is the Asian part of Turkey.
- 2. Amhara is a region of Ethiopia.
- 3. Cabo Delgado is in Mozambique.
- 4. Catalonia is in Spain.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Two pairs, not one, are correct.
- (b) Correct. Anatolia and Amhara are matched correctly.
- (c) Wrong. Cabo Delgado and Catalonia are mismatched.
- (d) Wrong. Pairs 3 and 4 are mismatched.
