UPSC Prelims 2022 · GS Paper I
Question 70: Geography
Consider the following pairs :
| Reservoirs | States | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ghataprabha | Telangana |
| 2 | Gandhi Sagar | Madhya Pradesh |
| 3 | Indira Sagar | Andhra Pradesh |
| 4 | Maithon | Chhattisgarh |
How many pairs given above are not correctly matched ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Gandhi Sagar, on the Chambal, is in Madhya Pradesh, so pair 2 is correct. The Ghataprabha reservoir (Hidkal) is in Karnataka, not Telangana. Indira Sagar, on the Narmada, is in Madhya Pradesh, not Andhra Pradesh. Maithon, on the Barakar, is in Jharkhand, not Chhattisgarh. So three pairs are not correctly matched.
- 1. The Ghataprabha reservoir is in Karnataka.
- 2. Gandhi Sagar is in Madhya Pradesh.
- 3. The Narmada's Indira Sagar is in Madhya Pradesh.
- 4. Maithon is in Jharkhand.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Three pairs, not one, are mismatched.
- (b) Wrong. Three pairs, not two, are mismatched.
- (c) Correct. Pairs 1, 3 and 4 are mismatched.
- (d) Wrong. Gandhi Sagar is correctly matched.
Worth knowing: The Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh is also called Indira Sagar, but UPSC takes the Narmada's Indira Sagar in Madhya Pradesh as the intended reservoir.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
