Consider the following :

  1. 1.Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
  2. 2.Missile Technology Control Regime
  3. 3.Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

India is a member of which of the above ?

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

India is a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, headquartered in Beijing, and is among its largest shareholders. India became the 35th member of the Missile Technology Control Regime in June 2016; it is a voluntary group, not a treaty. India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in June 2017, along with Pakistan. All three are correct.

  • 1. India is a founding member of the AIIB.
  • 2. India joined the MTCR in 2016.
  • 3. India became a full SCO member in 2017.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: India is a founding member of the AIIB.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: India became a full SCO member in 2017.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. India is also an SCO member.
  • (b) Wrong. India is also in the AIIB and the MTCR.
  • (c) Wrong. India is also in the AIIB.
  • (d) Correct. India is a member of all three.
