UPSC Prelims 2022 · GS Paper I
Question 62: Geography
Consider the following States :
- 1.Andhra Pradesh
- 2.Kerala
- 3.Himachal Pradesh
- 4.Tripura
How many of the above are generally known as tea-producing States ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Tea is grown commercially in all four: Andhra Pradesh in the Visakhapatnam hills around Araku, Kerala in the Western Ghats at Munnar and Wayanad, Himachal Pradesh in the Kangra valley, and Tripura. Assam and West Bengal lead production, but all four listed States are generally known as tea-producing States, so the answer is all four.
- 1. Andhra Pradesh grows tea in the Araku area.
- 2. Kerala grows tea at Munnar and Wayanad.
- 3. Himachal Pradesh grows tea in the Kangra valley.
- 4. Tripura is a tea-growing State.
How you could have got this
No shortcut here: in a “how many” question, ruling out options doesn’t help. Every statement has to be judged.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. More than one of the listed States grows tea.
- (b) Wrong. More than two of the listed States grow tea.
- (c) Wrong. All four, not three, grow tea.
- (d) Correct. All four are tea-producing States.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
