With reference to the “G20 Common Framework”, consider the following statements :
- 1.It is an initiative endorsed by the G20 together with the Paris Club.
- 2.It is an initiative to support Low Income Countries with unsustainable debt.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatments beyond the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) was endorsed by the G20 together with the Paris Club in November 2020. It sets out how eligible low-income countries whose debt is unsustainable can have it restructured case by case, with creditors such as China, outside the Paris Club, expected to take part on comparable terms. Remember: G20 plus Paris Club, aimed at low-income debtors.
- 1. It was endorsed by the G20 together with the Paris Club.
- 2. It targets DSSI-eligible low-income countries with unsustainable debt.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: It was endorsed by the G20 together with the Paris Club.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: It targets DSSI-eligible low-income countries with unsustainable debt.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Wrong. Statement 1 is also correct: the Paris Club joined the G20 in endorsing it.
- (c) Correct. Both statements describe the Common Framework.
- (d) Wrong. Both statements are correct.
