Question 32: Science and Technology

With reference to Web 3·0, consider the following statements :

  1. 1.Web 3·0 technology enables people to control their own data.
  2. 2.In Web 3·0 world, there can be blockchain based social networks.
  3. 3.Web 3·0 is operated by users collectively rather than a corporation.

Which of the statements given above are correct ?

a1 and 2 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Web 3.0 is the decentralised web built on blockchains. Users hold their own data and identity through wallets, blockchain-based social networks can exist, and platforms are governed collectively by users or token holders, for example through DAOs, rather than by one corporation. All three statements describe Web 3.0.

  • 1. Web 3.0 aims to give users control of their own data.
  • 2. Decentralised, blockchain-based social networks are possible.
  • 3. It is meant to be run collectively by users rather than a single corporation.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Web 3.0 aims to give users control of their own data.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Decentralised, blockchain-based social networks are possible.

  3. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: It is meant to be run collectively by users rather than a single corporation.

Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Statement 3 on collective operation is also right.
  • (b) Wrong. Statement 1 on user control of data is also right.
  • (c) Wrong. Statement 2 on blockchain-based social networks is also right.
  • (d) Correct. All three describe Web 3.0.
