Question 29: Geography

In the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year normally occurs in the :

aFirst half of the month of June
bSecond half of the month of June
cFirst half of the month of July
dSecond half of the month of July

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere is the summer solstice, around 21 June, when the Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer and the hemisphere is tilted most towards it. That falls in the second half of June. The shortest day comes around 22 December, at the winter solstice, so by July the days are already shortening.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The first half of June is before the solstice.
  • (b) Correct. The solstice falls on about 21 June.
  • (c) In early July days are already shortening.
  • (d) In late July days are shortening further.
