UPSC Prelims 2021 · GS Paper I
Question 91: Polity and Governance
Under the Indian Constitution, concentration of wealth violates
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Article 39(c), a Directive Principle of State Policy, directs the State to ensure that the operation of the economic system does not result in the concentration of wealth and means of production to the common detriment. So concentration of wealth violates the Directive Principles. It is not a violation of the Right to Equality or the Right to Freedom, which are Fundamental Rights, and welfare is a concept, not a constitutional provision.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the Right to Equality in Part III does not address wealth concentration.
- (b) Right: Article 39(c) of the Directive Principles directs the State to prevent it.
- (c) Wrong: the Right to Freedom does not deal with it.
- (d) Wrong: welfare is a concept, not a specific constitutional provision.
