Question 39: History and Culture
Consider the following statements :
- 1.St. Francis Xavier was one of the founding members of the Jesuit Order.
- 2.St. Francis Xavier died in Goa and a church is dedicated to him there.
- 3.The Feast of St. Francis Xavier is celebrated in Goa each year.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
St. Francis Xavier was one of the seven founders of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit Order, with Ignatius of Loyola. He died in 1552 on Sancian Island off the coast of China, not in Goa, although his remains are kept at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa. His feast is celebrated every year in Goa on 3 December. Remember: died off China, relics in Goa.
- 1. He was among the founding members of the Jesuit Order.
- 2. He died off the coast of China; only his remains lie in Goa.
- 3. His feast is celebrated in Goa every year on 3 December.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: He died off the coast of China; only his remains lie in Goa.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 2 is false, since he died off China, not in Goa.
- (b) Wrong: statement 2 is false, and it leaves out statement 1.
- (c) Right: statements 1 and 3 are correct.
- (d) Wrong: statement 2 is false.
