Question 36: History and Culture
With reference to Madanapalle of Andhra Pradesh, which one of the following statements is correct?
aPingali Venkayya designed the tricolour Indian National Flag here.
bPattabhi Sitaramaiah led the Quit India Movement of Andhra region from here.
cRabindranath Tagore translated the National Anthem from Bengali to English here.
dMadame Blavatsky and Colonel Olcott set up headquarters of Theosophical Society first here.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
In February 1919 Rabindranath Tagore stayed at the Besant Theosophical College at Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh and translated Jana Gana Mana from Bengali into English as The Morning Song of India. Pingali Venkayya is remembered for designing the tricolour, presented in Vijayawada, not Madanapalle. The Theosophical Society's headquarters moved from New York to Adyar in Madras, not to Madanapalle.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: Venkayya's flag design is linked to Vijayawada, not Madanapalle.
- (b) Wrong: Madanapalle was not the centre of Pattabhi Sitaramayya's Quit India leadership.
- (c) Right: Tagore translated the anthem into English at Madanapalle.
- (d) Wrong: the Theosophical Society's headquarters moved to Adyar, Madras.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
