UPSC Prelims 2020 · GS Paper I
Question 86: Geography
With reference to pulse production in India, consider the following statements :
- 1.Black gram can be cultivated as both kharif and rabi crop.
- 2.Green-gram alone accounts for nearly half of pulse production.
- 3.In the last three decades, while the production of kharif pulses has increased, the production of rabi pulses has decreased.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Black gram (urad) is grown in both the kharif and rabi seasons, so statement 1 is right. Gram (chickpea), not green gram, is the largest pulse, at around two-fifths of production, so statement 2 fails. Production of rabi pulses, led by gram, has increased rather than decreased over three decades, so statement 3 fails.
- 1. Black gram is grown in both kharif and rabi.
- 2. Gram (chickpea) is the largest pulse, not green gram.
- 3. Rabi pulse production, led by gram, has increased.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Gram (chickpea) is the largest pulse, not green gram.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: statement 1 only.
- (b) Wrong: statements 2 and 3 are false.
- (c) Wrong: gram, not green gram, is the largest pulse.
- (d) Wrong: statements 2 and 3 are false.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
