  1. 1.Askot Wildlife Sanctuary
  2. 2.Gangotri National Park
  3. 3.Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary
  4. 4.Manas National Park

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 and 2 only
b2 and 3 only
c3 and 4 only
d1 and 4 only

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

The Himalayan musk deer lives in high-altitude forests of the Himalaya. Askot Wildlife Sanctuary in Pithoragarh and Gangotri National Park, both in Uttarakhand, are among its habitats. Kishanpur lies in the Terai plains of Uttar Pradesh and Manas in the Assam foothills, so musk deer are not likely to be found there.

  • 1. Askot is a Himalayan sanctuary where musk deer occurs.
  • 2. Gangotri National Park has high-altitude musk deer habitat.
  • 3. Kishanpur is a Terai plains sanctuary.
  • 4. Manas is a foothill and plains reserve, not musk deer habitat.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Askot is a Himalayan sanctuary where musk deer occurs.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Gangotri National Park has high-altitude musk deer habitat.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: Askot and Gangotri in Uttarakhand.
  • (b) Wrong: Kishanpur is in the Terai plains.
  • (c) Wrong: neither Kishanpur nor Manas is musk deer habitat.
  • (d) Wrong: Manas is not a musk deer habitat.
