  1. 1.Nagarhole National Park
  2. 2.Papikonda National Park
  3. 3.Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve
  4. 4.Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 and 2 only
b3 and 4 only
c1, 3 and 4 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Nagarhole National Park and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary drain to the Kabini, a tributary of the Cauvery, and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve lies in the Bhavani part of the Cauvery basin. Papikonda National Park lies along the Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, so it is outside the Cauvery basin.

  • 1. Nagarhole lies in the Kabini part of the Cauvery basin.
  • 2. Papikonda is along the Godavari.
  • 3. Sathyamangalam lies in the Bhavani part of the Cauvery basin.
  • 4. Wayanad drains to the Kabini, a Cauvery tributary.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Nagarhole lies in the Kabini part of the Cauvery basin.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Papikonda is along the Godavari.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: Papikonda is in the Godavari basin.
  • (b) Wrong: Nagarhole also lies in the Cauvery basin.
  • (c) Right: Nagarhole, Sathyamangalam and Wayanad.
  • (d) Wrong: includes Papikonda, which is in the Godavari basin.
