In India, under cyber insurance for individuals, which of the following benefits are generally covered, in addition to payment for the loss of funds and other benefits ?

  1. 1.Cost of restoration of the computer system in case of malware disrupting access to one’s computer
  2. 2.Cost of a new computer if some miscreant wilfully damages it, if proved so
  3. 3.Cost of hiring a specialized consultant to minimize the loss in case of cyber extortion
  4. 4.Cost of defence in the Court of Law if any third party files a suit

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1, 2 and 4 only
b1, 3 and 4 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Individual cyber insurance policies generally cover restoring the computer system after malware, the fee of a specialist consultant in cases of cyber extortion, and legal defence costs if a third party sues, in addition to loss of funds. Replacing a computer that someone deliberately damages is a matter for property or hardware cover, not generally for cyber insurance.

  • 1. Restoration after malware is generally covered.
  • 2. Replacement of a deliberately damaged computer is not usually covered by cyber cover.
  • 3. A specialist consultant for cyber extortion is generally covered.
  • 4. Legal defence costs against third-party suits are generally covered.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Replacement of a deliberately damaged computer is not usually covered by cyber cover.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3 or 4.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: includes the cost of a new computer, which is not usually covered.
  • (b) Right: restoration, extortion consultant and legal defence.
  • (c) Wrong: includes the new computer and leaves out restoration and legal defence.
  • (d) Wrong: includes the new computer.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
