Question 45: Science and Technology

What is the importance of using Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines in India ?

  1. 1.These vaccines are effective against pneumonia as well as meningitis and sepsis.
  2. 2.Dependence on antibiotics that are not effective against drug-resistant bacteria can be reduced.
  3. 3.These vaccines have no side effects and cause no allergic reactions.

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 only
b1 and 2 only
c3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines protect against disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Fewer infections mean less use of antibiotics, which lowers the pressure that breeds drug-resistant bacteria. No vaccine is free of side effects or allergic reactions, so statement 3 is wrong.

  • 1. They protect against pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis.
  • 2. Fewer infections mean less antibiotic use and less resistance.
  • 3. No vaccine is entirely free of side effects or allergic reactions.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Fewer infections mean less antibiotic use and less resistance.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (d) goes: it includes 3.

What you needed to know: No vaccine is entirely free of side effects or allergic reactions.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statement 2 is also correct.
  • (b) Right: statements 1 and 2.
  • (c) Wrong: no vaccine is without side effects.
  • (d) Wrong: includes statement 3, which is false.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
