Question 38: Science and Technology

With the present state of development, Artificial Intelligence can effectively do which of the following ?

  1. 1.Bring down electricity consumption in industrial units
  2. 2.Create meaningful short stories and songs
  3. 3.Disease diagnosis
  4. 4.Text-to-Speech Conversion
  5. 5.Wireless transmission of electrical energy

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1, 2, 3 and 5 only
b1, 3 and 4 only
c2, 4 and 5 only
d1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

AI could, as of 2020, cut electricity use in industrial units (smart control of cooling and machines), help diagnose disease from scans and records, and convert text to speech. UPSC's key rejects item 2: AI could not then effectively create meaningful stories and songs. Wireless transmission of electrical energy is a power-transfer problem in physics and engineering, not something AI does.

  • 1. AI can optimise energy use in industrial units.
  • 2. Not accepted as effective in UPSC's key at the time.
  • 3. AI assists disease diagnosis.
  • 4. Text-to-speech is a standard AI application.
  • 5. Wireless power transmission is not an AI function.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Not accepted as effective in UPSC's key at the time.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3, 4 or 5.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: includes items 2 and 5, which AI could not do effectively.
  • (b) Right: items 1, 3 and 4 only.
  • (c) Wrong: items 2 and 5 are not accepted, and it leaves out 1 and 3.
  • (d) Wrong: includes items 2 and 5.

Worth knowing: Since 2022 generative AI writes short stories and songs routinely; UPSC's key reflects the 2020 state of technology.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
