With reference to the history of India, “Ulgulan” or the Great Tumult is the description of which of the following events ?
aThe Revolt of 1857
bThe Mappila Rebellion of 1921
cThe Indigo Revolt of 1859 – 60
dBirsa Munda’s Revolt of 1899 – 1900
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Ulgulan, the Great Tumult, was the name of the Munda uprising in the Chotanagpur region led by Birsa Munda in 1899 to 1900. It was a millenarian movement against land alienation, forced labour and outsiders (dikus), and sought a Munda raj. The Revolt of 1857, the Mappila rebellion and the Indigo revolt are not called Ulgulan.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: 1857 is called the Revolt or the first war of independence.
- (b) Wrong: the Mappila Rebellion of 1921 took place in Malabar.
- (c) Wrong: the Indigo revolt of 1859-60 was in Bengal.
- (d) Right: Birsa Munda's revolt of 1899-1900.
