Question 32: History and Culture

In the context of Indian history, the Rakhmabai case of 1884 revolved around

  1. 1.women’s right to gain education
  2. 2.age of consent
  3. 3.restitution of conjugal rights

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 and 2 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Rakhmabai, married in childhood to Dadaji Bhikaji, refused to live with him when she grew up, and he sued for restitution of conjugal rights. The case (1884 to 1888) brought child marriage and the age of consent into public debate, feeding the Age of Consent Act of 1891. It was not about a woman's right to gain education.

  • 1. The case was not about women's education.
  • 2. It sharpened the debate on child marriage and the age of consent.
  • 3. The husband sued for restitution of conjugal rights.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The case was not about women's education.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: the case was not about the right to education.
  • (b) Right: age of consent and restitution of conjugal rights.
  • (c) Wrong: includes the right to education, which was not the issue.
  • (d) Wrong: statement 1 is not part of the case.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
