Question 57: Basic Numeracy

A sum of ₹ 2,500 is distributed among X, Y and Z in the ratio 1/2 : 3/4 : 5/6. What is the difference between the maximum share and the minimum share?

a₹ 300
b₹ 350
c₹ 400
d₹ 450

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Turn the ratio into whole numbers by multiplying by 12: 1/2 : 3/4 : 5/6 = 6 : 9 : 10. Total parts = 25, so one part = 2,500 / 25 = ₹100. The shares are ₹600, ₹900 and ₹1,000. Maximum minus minimum = 1,000 - 600 = ₹400.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) 300 is the difference between the middle and smallest shares.
  • (b) 350 matches no pair of shares.
  • (c) Right: 1,000 - 600 = 400.
  • (d) 450 matches no pair of shares.
