Question 46: Reading Comprehension

Passage—5 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Economic liberalization in India was shaped…”

With reference to the above passage, the following assumptions have been made :

  1. 1.India's economy needs to be greatly integrated with global economy so as to create large number of jobs and to sustain its growth momentum.
  2. 2.Economic liberalization would cause large economic growth which would reduce poverty and create sufficient employment in the long run.

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Neither assumption holds. The passage is critical of liberalisation: it reports jobless growth, persistent poverty and rising inequality since it began, so it does not support the idea that liberalisation brings enough jobs and poverty reduction. It also never argues for greater integration with the global economy as the way to create jobs.

  • 1. Global integration is not argued for as a source of jobs.
  • 2. The passage reports jobless growth and persistent poverty after liberalisation.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Global integration is not argued for as a source of jobs.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: The passage reports jobless growth and persistent poverty after liberalisation.

Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Nothing in the passage recommends deeper global integration.
  • (b) The passage says the opposite: growth came without jobs and poverty persisted.
  • (c) Neither assumption is supported, so both cannot be valid.
  • (d) Right: both go against or beyond the passage.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
