Question 36: Data Interpretation

Three Statements S1, S2 and S3 are given below followed by a Question :

  1. S1C is younger than D, but older than A and B.
  2. S2D is the oldest.
  3. S3A is older than B.
  4. QuestionWho among A, B, C and D is the youngest?

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Statements and the Question?

aS1 alone is sufficient to answer the Question.
bS1 and S2 together are sufficient to answer the Question.
cS2 and S3 together are sufficient to answer the Question.
dS1 and S3 together are sufficient to answer the Question.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

S1 gives D > C > A and C > B in age, so the youngest is A or B. S3 says A is older than B. Together: D > C > A > B, so B is the youngest. S2 only repeats that D is the oldest and says nothing about A and B. S2 and S3 together cannot place C against B.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) S1 alone leaves A or B as the youngest.
  • (b) S2 repeats that D is oldest; A versus B is still open.
  • (c) S2 and S3 do not compare C with A and B, so the youngest could be B or C.
  • (d) Right: S1 and S3 give D > C > A > B, so B is the youngest.
