Question 28: Data Interpretation
Two Statements S1 and S2 are given below with regard to four numbers P, Q, R and S followed by a Question :
- S1R is greater than P as well as Q.
- S2S is not the largest one.
- QuestionAmong four numbers P, Q, R and S, which one is the largest?
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Statements and the Question?
aS1 alone is sufficient to answer the Question.
bS2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question.
cS1 and S2 together are sufficient to answer the Question, but neither S1 alone nor S2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question.
dS1 and S2 together are not sufficient to answer the Question.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
S1 says R beats P and Q, but S may be bigger than R, so S1 alone fails. S2 says only that S is not the largest, which leaves P, Q or R open, so S2 alone fails. Together: R beats P and Q, and S is out of the running, so no number can exceed R. R is the largest.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) S1 alone leaves S as a possible largest number.
- (b) S2 alone eliminates only S.
- (c) Right: together they leave R as the only possible largest number.
- (d) Together they do settle it: R is the largest.
