UPSC Prelims 2019 · GS Paper I
Question 83: Geography
With reference to the cultivation of Kharif crops in India in the last five years, consider the following statements :
- 1.Area under rice cultivation is the highest.
- 2.Area under the cultivation of jowar is more than that of oilseeds.
- 3.Area of cotton cultivation is more than that of sugarcane.
- 4.Area under sugarcane cultivation has steadily decreased.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Statements 1 and 3 are correct. Rice has the largest area among Kharif crops. Cotton covers a much larger area than sugarcane. Kharif oilseeds such as soybean and groundnut cover more area than jowar, so statement 2 is wrong, and the area under sugarcane has gone up and down rather than steadily decreasing, so statement 4 is wrong.
- 1. Rice has the highest Kharif area.
- 2. Oilseeds cover more area than jowar.
- 3. Cotton area is well above sugarcane area.
- 4. Sugarcane area has fluctuated, not steadily fallen.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Oilseeds cover more area than jowar.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: statements 1 and 3 hold.
- (b) Includes statements 2 and 4, which are wrong, and drops statement 1.
- (c) Includes the wrong statements 2 and 4 and drops 1 and 3.
- (d) Includes statements 2 and 4, which are wrong.
